CHAPTER 16

Izzy sat with her back facing her office door as she emptied out some old files from her desk. She caught a whiff of a familiar scent, and felt a pair of hands gently cover her eyes.

“I’ve been wondering what you’ve been up to,” Izzy said, without removing the hands.

Queenie spun Izzy’s chair around, “How did you know it was me?”

“Just a hunch,” said Izzy. “Where have you been hiding?”

“In the library. It’s this large building with lots of books, tables and computers. And in those books, there’s lots of useful information. I had no idea such a thing existed.”

Izzy laughed. “I’ve missed your little jokes.”

“I’ve missed the sound of your laughter.” Queenie hesitated, took a deep breath, and then continued. “Maybe we can try planning another movie night since the last one ended the moment Pudge decided to journey off to Jamaica Plain.”

“I’d like that,” said Izzy. “I thought maybe you disappeared.”

“You still don’t have any faith in me, do you?”

“No, it’s not that. This whole situation with Pudge is a delicate one. And, with everything that’s happened, I would have understood if it was too much for you to handle. Spending time with her is one thing, but going out at night to look for her is another. Something very unpleasant could have happened to either of us.”

“But nothing happened. And if I hadn’t spent so much time with her in the first place, she wouldn’t have told me that story about her dad, and we wouldn’t have found her when we did.” Queenie leaned against Izzy’s desk. “Everything happens for a reason. Besides, that whole incident just made me more determined than ever to finish this project and get the word out. So I’m moving forward without Pudge’s help.”

“Have you asked her about it again?” asked Izzy.

“Nope. And I don’t plan on it, either. I’m back on her good side, and I want to keep it that way.”

“Maybe you should try a different approach? I know that she looks up to you, Queenie. I think that if you presented it in another way, she’ll jump at the chance to help you. ”

“You think so?”

Izzy nodded her head gently.

“Okay, then. I’ll take your advice.” Queenie held her hands up in the air, “I guess we’ll see what happens.”
